Hallowe'en Party

Monday Craig went out to get a movie and spotted a ship in the harbour, so we went out for a drive to show the kids. A container ship: one more mighty machine for Liam to be excited about!

This is the view of Iqaluit as we drove around trying to get closer to the ship:

Here we are

We were so lucky, it snowed our first night here. You may not think this is a good thing, however, Liam was pretty much sold on Iqaluit when he could make a snowman on his first morning here. Then a garbage truck, tanker truck, school bus and taxi drove by on his first day. A slice of Liam heaven! Logan wasn't too keen to put on snowpants, but soon thought the whole play-in-the-snow-thing was a lot of fun. Craig started work at 8AM, so it was just me and the little boys. After playing in the snow, we had lunch and went "exploring." It came down to driving around in our rented car and seeing if we could get back home again. Which we did. However I was too busy adjusting to driving here (harder than you may think - the stop signs take a bit of getting used to, as does being able to see where you want to go and not being able to get there) to take any pictures.

By the way, here is a picture of our house. It's the one on the left.
Anyway, the next day Craig drove and he took us a bit farther afield. Here are some pictures around town on Wednesday:

On our way

At the airport we had lots of goodbyes... then the adventure began.

We didn't know how the kids (all 3 of them) would do on the plane, so our fingers were crossed.

Hooray for WestJet, who kept Liam happy for an entire flight with Treehouse on his own TV screen. And Logan was busy almost the whole time plugging and unplugging headsets. Who knew? Oh, and Craig also enjoyed the TV. We stopped in Toronto to change passengers, which was a good time for bathroom breaks and such. Then back to the TV. And Logan discovered his favourite thing to do when taking off. Fall asleep. Ahhhhh.....nap time for both of us since I was "forced" to hold him while he napped.

We landed in Ottawa and found very friendly and helpful people who locked up our (tons) of luggage overnight for free, stayed in a lovely brand new hotel, ate some yummy food, hung out in the pool and went to sleep. We were up early in the morning; in Regina we learned that our family needs way more time to do the check-in/security thing. As it turned out, both were a breeze and we had plenty of time for Tim Horton's on the other side for breakfast.

Then we had even more time because the plane was late boarding. Why do they even bother with the farce of pre-boarding for those travelling with children and people requiring assistance? Because it seems that everyone on that flight needed some kind of assistance. Anyway, I think they should let people with kids get on last so they don't get so antsy. Liam was disappointed with Canadian North's lack of TVs, but he was impressed with the view and his dad answering 101 questions. Logan fell asleep. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast of steak and eggs and a special treat of Bailey's and coffee. At this point Logan was awake, Liam was still asking questions and Craig was pretending to nap. No, they won't skip the coffee. Not even if you ask nicely.

Some pictures Craig took as we got close to Iqaluit:

We arrived to a blustery Iqaluit, some cold hands (Logan now agrees immediately to mitts and hood up) and a friendly uniformed guy who helped us with our baggage, got us two luggage carts (after I turned away for the briefest second and ours disappeared), and took us to our new home.

We had our first meal in our new home (pancakes and syrup, of course) and got the beds set up. One of our neighbours came over and introduced himself and offered to lend us anything we might need. Then the guys arrived with my new dishes that arrived by FedEx that afternoon - hooray! We got those cleaned up and went to pick up milk, egg, etc. and drop Craig off at the office so he and "the guys" could bring over our sealift. Both boys fell asleep on the way. We came home and Liam stayed asleep - for 16 hours. A rough couple of days for the little man.

Once all of our sealift was in the house, we sat around and had a beer (the universal method of payment for moving anything, right?) then everyone went home and Craig and I spent the next many hours putting away and organizing food. And that was the end of a verrrry long day!

Before we left

What an adventure - perhaps the craziest part of the whole trip was the day before the packers came. That's when we found out it could be a month before our household effects arrive. And that hotel stays just aren't done. It involved a mad rush to pack the bare essentials: bedding, towels, kitchen stuff, enough clothes, Hallowe'en colstumes for the kids. Then we had to find a way to get it on the plane, etc. I'm actually getting stressed just thinking about it!

On the good side, we had time to do a few "last visits." Not as many as we would have liked, but there is never enough time.

Here are a few pictures from then:

After many last minute things, it was off to the airport.....
